Limuru Golf Club

Limuru Country Club is located just 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Nairobi, surrounded by luxuriously verdant tea fields stretching for miles and miles on either side of the road. The drive takes you up the Uplands Escarpment as the countryside begins its ascent towards the Aberdare Mountain Range. Continuing along this escarpment, past Limuru, towards Naivasha you will witness magnificent views of the Great Rift Valley.

Visitors always remark on the scenery while the view from the clubhouse verandah is unrivalled at any other Kenyan golf course and includes the finishing holes for the front and back nine. During the cooler evenings of the July and August 'winter season, members retire indoors to the hearty, warm fireside. The clubhouse which has seen many improvements over the years gives the feel of an old English pub on one side and a banqueting hall on the opposite side. Many of the original fittings remain. The hardwood floors and bar, the tavern-style tables and benches in the lounge and the roaring fires lit nightly, combine to exude a warm and hospitable atmosphere. The kitchen serves three meals a day and all-day snacks from an extensive menu. Large picture windows afford diners unobstructed views of the ninth and eighteenth greens.

Sigona Golf Club

The very lovely Sigona Golf Club is about a fifteen-to twenty-minute drive northwest of Nairobi heading towards Lake Naivasha, sitting almost halfway between Nairobi and Limuru. The Club has a beautiful eighteen-hole country-style golf course which, has become very popular with residents and visitors.

Sigona Golf Club is located in Kikuyu. Despite the dual carriageway, which runs in front of the Club connecting Nairobi to Naivasha, the golf course does not experience much noise or pollution. It sits downhill from the Clubhouse in very serene and quiet surroundings with lots of fresh air. Sigona Golf Club was originally built by Kikuyu Estates Limited. It then existed for the sole pleasure and use of the Managing Director of the Company. Mr. Berkley-Mathews, and his invited guests.

Mr. Berkley-Mathews was responsible for the design and construction of the course which was carved out of a wattle tree plantation in 1938. It was one of the few architecturally designed courses in Nairobi. The first nine-holes were constructed around an elephant' watering hole, which explains the elephant head logo you see today. Originally rows of wattle trees were left to separate the fairways. Later various shade and ornamental trees such as podo, cape chestnut, 'muringa', cypress and pine, were planted. Mr. Simpson of Liphook, Hampshire was the course architect who, after making only a few alterations to the initial construction, declared it a championship golf course.

Royal Nairobi Golf Club

The Royal Nairobi Golf Club is the oldest golf society in Kenya, founded in 1906. The original 9-hole course with sand greens was expanded to a fully grassed 18 holes in the 1920s. Wild animals roamed the course in the early days and a marauding leopard was shot on the course in 1919. The Nairobi Club, as it was originally called, hosted the first East African Ladies' championship in 1932 under the auspices of the Kenya Golf Union. Three years later, in Jubilee year, King George V granted the club royal title.

A parkland layout that sits only ten minutes from downtown Nairobi, the course carries a par of 72 for a total yardage of just over 7,000 yards from the back markers, with a relatively flat front nine and a more undulating back nine.

The Ngong Hills are in view from most points on Royal Nairobi’s well-maintained course and, in the clear air, it is said that you can the distant snow capped Kilimanjaro. Specimen trees fringe fairways and many different flowering bushes create a colourful spectacle. Royal Nairobi is a joy to play no matter the time of year.
