The United States Open Championship takes in some of the country's finest courses, and is, as its name suggests, 'open' to anyone capable of qualifying. This gives it a mystique similar to Britain's Open, where dreams and legends can be made by the most unlikely players.

The Open is the jewel in the crown of the United States Golf Association's events, and is the second oldest event in the American golfing calendar. In 2011, the U.S. Open will see defending champion Graeme McDowell lead the field to the Congressional Country Club to do battle on the recently re-designed layout.

As the golfing elite converge upon the Blue Course at Congessional, the USGA has overseen a number of alterations to the course, most notably the reversal of the old 18th hole, which is now the 10th, while the rest of the routing has been shifted so that the original par-four 17th hole now plays as the permanent 18th.
