PARKAS-Open-Air Museum of the Centre of Europe
Lithuania is considered to be an East European country but many people
in the world will be surprised to find out that the geographic centre
of European continent lies just north of Vilnius , the capital city. EUROPOS
PARKAS, the leading open-air contemporary art museum devoted to the centre
of Europe was founded by Lithuanian sculptor Gintaras Karosas in 1991
after Lithuania had regained independence. The exhibition spans an area
of 55 hectares and displays over 90 works by artists from 27 countries
in the world. The collection includes large-scale works by famous contemporary
artists such as Abakanowicz, Oppenheim, LeWitt among others. The works
of art are complemented by the expressive landscape of the park, woodlands
and grasslands dotted with natural springs. The Museum exhibits the World's
Largest TV sculpture officially registered by Guinness World Records.
Guided tours are conducted in English, Russian and Lithuanian. Restaurant:
indoors and in the open-air surrounded by an exquisite view. Museum Shop
and Post Office open daily.
TV Tower
On the 13th of January, 1991, the Soviet troops and tanks surrounded the TV tower with the intention to occupy it. During the confrontation, 14 innocent civilians were killed. Today, the adjacent streets to the TV Tower are re-named to the names of those killed during the tragic events. In addition, a monument for the perished ones stands near the tower. Also inside the Tower, a small exhibition of pictures describing the events of that night is available. The total height of the entire TV Tower is 326.47 m. On sunny days, one may enjoy the beautiful panorama of Vilnius from the sightseeing site located in the height of 165 m.
