may not be the centre of the universe, or the centre of culture, but
you might be surprised to learn that Lithuania is in fact the smack
dab centre of Europe.
Lithuania owes much to the rich cultural currents of central Europe:
it once shared an empire with neighbouring Poland that stretched from
the Baltic Sea almost to the Black Sea. Its capital Vilnius boasts a
Baroque Old Town that is the largest in Eastern Europe and praised as
the 'New Prague'.
Vilnius is the centre of knowledge: there are 8 universities and several
research institutions there. Many people having a higher education –
specialists in electronics, information technologies, designers of computer
systems and programmers, representatives of different spheres of art
live and work in the city. Most residents of Vilnius speak several languages
– apart from the Lithuanian language they can speak Russian, Polish,
English, German or French.
Vilnius has a lot of museums, which provide a visitor
with the possibility to get acquainted with the sources of the Lithuanian
nation and the development of the formation of the state (the National
Museum), art collections that have been amassed in the course of centuries
(a branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum – the Museum of Applied
Art), collections of individual artists (Vilnius Picture Gallery).
